In the world today, approximately 828 million people suffer from hunger, and 2.3 billion are food insecure. This especially affects the youngest children, as there are 149 million children under five years of age who are stunted, 39 million are overweight and 45 million are wasted – the deadliest form of malnutrition. Therefore, it is essential to improve food distribution, as well as promote better eating habits; one option is to follow a planetary diet.
Although one of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda Chile Mobile Number List is to end world hunger, if we continue on the current path, by that date there will still be almost 670 million people without food. This is why various companies dedicated to the food sector have sought to improve their strategies to increase their impact and guarantee access to quality nutrition.
We tell you how a Mexican multinational company is doing it with this proposal that helps improve food production systems and its distribution, among other advantages.
What is a planetary or plant-based diet?
Knowing the global shortage, one of the most innovative proposals of Grupo Bimbo —the largest Mexican bakery company in the world—is to collectively create a planetary diet. This feeding model aims to take care of the health of both people and the planet, improving nutrition by balancing meals, avoiding the wear and tear of the soil to produce feed for livestock and reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the livestock .
But… what is a planetary diet? In the words of Aldin Delfino, New Business and Wellness Leader at Grupo Bimbo:
A planetary diet is a style of eating where the consumption of plant origin is prioritized, doubling the consumption of healthy foods such as whole grains and [...] minimizing (but not eliminating) animal consumption.
Aldin Delfino, New Business and Wellness Leader at Grupo Bimbo.
In this way, people would maintain their protein intake and improve the amount of nutrients and fiber that the human body needs for optimal development.
However, getting consumers to adopt this type of diet could be complicated, since, on average, a person consumes 41 kilograms of meat per year and in countries like the US, consumption reaches 119 kilos per person, while In Mexico it reaches 47 kilos . Even so, as a company dedicated to baking, Grupo Bimbo has several strategies to follow to increase the consumption of plant-based foods, such as:
Offer healthier products.
Source ingredients from sustainable suppliers.
Integrate clean recipes.
Plant-based diet: flexarian
The planetary diet proposed by Grupo Bimbo is also known as "flexitarian" and is popular among people who want to lose weight. Although the low intake of sugars and saturated fats is not the only benefit that this diet provides to health, it provides a greater amount of fiber and macronutrients, and also prevents the development of chronic diseases.
This is achieved through a consumption of 2,500 kilocalories per day, obtained from whole grains, tubers, vegetables and fruits in greater quantities, including plant-based foods , that is, made from plants.
